About Us

Ethnoarchaeology  is not a comparison between present and past, but between present (archaeological record) and present (current active society) (Wendrich 2013: 191). It is that branch of archaeology that studies contemporary cultures, societies, and technologies as a way of providing relevant analogies to elucidate patterned behavior thereby shedding light on  the  distant past.

The Ethnoarchaeology Research Group (ERG) is a part of the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA. We aim to train our members in theory and method in ethnoarchaeology and ethnography, especially field method through regional case studies. Group membership is not just limited to those in Los Angeles but it is designed to involve participants live from around the world via online portals.

Our core team includes:

Dr. Willeke Wendrich, Ph.D.

Director, Cotsen institute of Archaeology; Professor of Egyptian Archaeology & Digital Humanities; Joan Silsbee Chair of African Cultural Archaeology
